Wuling Air EV and Binguo EV Go Viral: Major Price Drops Shake Indonesia’s Electric Car Market

Jakarta, Indonesia – October 2025.
Indonesia’s electric vehicle (EV) market is buzzing again — this time not because of a new model launch or breakthrough technology, but because of a sudden and steep price drop that has sent social media and automotive forums into a frenzy. Viral posts circulating on TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook show Wuling Air EV and Wuling Binguo EV units being offered at discounts of tens of millions of rupiah, triggering heated discussions about the stability and competitiveness of the nation’s growing EV sector.

Massive Discounts Trigger Curiosity and Speculation

The viral trend started in late July 2025, when several Wuling dealerships across major Indonesian cities — including Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya — began offering price cuts reaching IDR 30–40 million for the compact Air EV and up to IDR 50 million for the more stylish Binguo EV.
Screenshots of promotional banners and WhatsApp dealer chats quickly went viral, with captions like “Harga Air EV sekarang mulai Rp 170 jutaan, serius?” (“Air EV now starts from only IDR 170 million, seriously?”).

For many Indonesians who had long considered EVs too expensive, this viral price cut rekindled interest. Some even rushed to local showrooms to confirm whether the offer was genuine.
According to Suara.com and DetikOto reports, several authorized Wuling sales representatives confirmed that the discounts were real, describing them as part of a “market refresh program” designed to boost year-end sales and clear inventory amid growing competition.

A Strategy to Respond to Rising Competition

Wuling Motors, a joint venture under SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) and one of the earliest players in Indonesia’s EV scene, appears to be repositioning itself as competition heats up.
With the entry of BYD’s Atto 1, Changan Lumin, and other newcomers, the once-dominant Wuling Air EV now faces stiffer competition in the affordable EV category.

Automotive analyst Arief Suryadi from the Jakarta Institute of Transport and Energy noted,

“The EV segment below Rp 300 million is becoming the real battleground. Consumers are no longer just chasing technology — they want reliability, service support, and resale value. Wuling’s aggressive pricing could be a smart move to maintain brand presence.”

In fact, some observers see this as a “price war” initiated by Chinese automakers fighting for dominance in Indonesia’s EV market. Wuling’s local production capability in Cikarang gives it flexibility to adjust prices, unlike fully imported models that still face import duties.

Consumer Reactions: Excitement Meets Skepticism

The online buzz isn’t just about excitement. Alongside enthusiasm came waves of skepticism. Some users questioned whether the discounts applied to older stock, demo cars, or units with limited warranty coverage. Others speculated about potential software issues or supply chain slowdowns.

Dealers, however, were quick to clarify that the price adjustments applied to new units and were part of a short-term promotion, not a clearance of defective stock.
On TikTok, automotive content creators such as @MobilTrend and @OtoSmartID posted test-drive clips, highlighting that the discounted models were identical in quality and features to regular ones — including the same battery range and infotainment system.

In several showrooms in Jakarta and Tangerang, visitors reportedly queued to reserve Air EV units, particularly the Air EV Long Range variant offering up to 300 km of range per charge. Meanwhile, Binguo EV — known for its retro-inspired design and dual-tone color options — attracted younger buyers looking for a blend of affordability and style.

Why Wuling’s Move Could Change the Game

From a market perspective, the viral discounts could reshape pricing dynamics for other automakers.
If Wuling’s sales surge following the campaign, competitors like BYD, Chery, and Neta may be forced to rethink their pricing strategies or introduce additional incentives such as free home chargers and extended battery warranties.

Industry insiders suggest that this pricing maneuver also aligns with Indonesia’s broader EV adoption targets.
The government aims to have 2 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030, and price remains the biggest barrier to entry. Affordable options like Air EV and Binguo EV can accelerate that transition.

“Wuling’s pricing strategy complements the government’s goal,” explained Dewi Anggraeni, spokesperson for the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVI).

“Lower entry prices, coupled with tax incentives and better charging infrastructure, can make EVs more mainstream across regions — not just in Jakarta.”

Key Specs Still Impress Despite Lower Price

Both models continue to offer competitive specs for their class:

  • Wuling Air EV Long Range
    • Range: Up to 300 km per charge
    • Power: 30 kW electric motor
    • Charging time: ~8 hours using a 2.0 kW charger
    • Interior: 10.25-inch dual-screen infotainment system, smart keyless entry
  • Wuling Binguo EV (333 km variant)
    • Range: Up to 333 km per charge
    • Power: 50 kW motor
    • Design: Two-tone pastel body, circular LED headlamps, premium leather seats
    • Smart Features: Auto-hold, regenerative braking, and voice command

These specs position both models as practical urban EVs for Indonesian users, especially for daily commuting in big cities where charging stations are increasingly available.

What’s Next for Indonesia’s EV Market

The viral discount wave has done more than just boost sales — it has reignited conversation about how EVs are priced, marketed, and supported in Indonesia.
Experts believe more automakers will soon follow Wuling’s path by offering flexible financing, subscription options, or trade-in programs to lure conventional car owners.

If consumer demand continues at this pace, Indonesia could see its most significant year yet for EV adoption in 2026, with Wuling’s Air EV and Binguo EV leading the charge — quite literally.
